The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford has been filmed by Andrew Dominik, best known for his 2000 flick Chopper, which told the merry tale of Aussie psychopath Mark 'Chopper' Read and his penchant for sculpting human flesh. The Assassination of... stars Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and Robert Duval, and tells of the hunting down and demise of the famous nineteenth century American hoodlum.
The soundtrack for The Assassination is notably different from Ellis and Cave's score for John Hillcoat's Proposition film of 2005. Whereas their work for the Australian western was built around eerie repeated refrains, lonely violin and and moments of vocals that were as bleak as a sun-blasted tree, the material here sounds fuller and arguably more polished, played by a full string section. Nevertheless, it's still a well-realised, haunting work.
Anyone purchasing the compact disc version also gets a nice booklet that features an amusing picture of Mr Cave done up in the garb of the time, holding a guitar as if about to rip into a beans-around-the-campfire version of 'No Pussy Blues'.’
