They Came From The Stars I Saw Them win the most pretentious band going every year, hands down (except maybe Chromehoof, but Chromehoof rock). This should be their death knell but it’s not, for there are some positive aspects about being pretencious. Think about it; you’re confident in yourself so the music you make doesn’t have the considerations of external opinions or peer pressure, Sun Ra, Kraftwerk and many others have made tonnes of revolutionary music whilst turning their noses up at everyone and believing they’re not of this world, in fact most people get a bit pretencious when they’re passionate about something.
Anyway, what a load of bollocks. This album has good bits, some funky squelching keyboards, some cool disco rhythms and a general feeling of being set in outer space. But for the most part it’s a bunch of melodies that aren’t very good over cool music. Sometimes it’s great as the tracks evolve into these massive looping rhythm monsters, those are the longer tracks. The shorter tracks have him singing more and getting in the way of the good stuff. They Came From The Stars I Saw Them should share a line-up with the Zan Pan, as they’re kind of similar, both having two very domineering front men and well naff music that’s played and arranged so well it’s actually damn good.
Anyway.
