Alex James has gradually turned from drunk bassist from Blur into a gentrified, country-dwelling, tweedy, beardy nonce over the last few years, and this transformation is complete with news he is about to take up making his very own fromage. "My heart always beats a little bit faster in the cheese aisle of a French supermarket," he writes in a four-page piece in today's The Independent, "The Italians, too, eat more cheese than us, as do the Danes. Danish cheese is not as well known, but well worth exploring. There is a dimension to a well-stocked Danish cheeseboard that would daunt any cheese daredevil."
James has his own column in the paper called The Great Escape (brilliant!), where he writes about opening a cheeky little white Bordeaux vintage with Annabel and George on his Cotswolds farm. It's delightful!
Now the former hellraiser is taking up the challenge: "The more I think about cheese," he writes, "the more I like it, and the more I want some, which is why I'm taking matters into my own hands and venturing into the world of independent cheese making."
