genre - a useful tool for understanding and appreciating music or a French word with no place in our country (like the French people themselves)?

here ARE bands that exist outside it

the endless debates on wiki pages on whether someone should be considererd post rock or math rock

oom or drone

doom

or whatever

I think it's fair to say about 95 % exist within it

are dull and pointless

yeah

but they're a useful vocabulary for describing thisgn

certainly a band can be several

yes

in a career, in an album, in a song

and can be different ones to different people

within all of those

MCR - album 1: post-hardcore/emo 2: pop punk 3: rock

Also - would The Cribs exist if they wasn't generic?

that's the thing

so many bands go 'oh we don't consider ourselves to be indie' or whatever

and they clearly are

t's not an intentional thing

and chart indie wouldn't exist if we didn't have the cribs in order to give it meanin

or whoever

oks, kaiser chiefs etc

genres take their meaning from the bands they're applied to, not the other way round
