I certainly agree with the first sentence of 'a great line-up of performers took to the stage last night'.....however, its a shame that for someone who can obviously write you seem to have had difficulty reading. There were posters and a lot of information floating around about who was playing that night, and it seems very lazy for someone who feels able to review a gig you can't be bothered to find out who was actually playing. They were called Diagonal by the way.

i'd have to agree with the silent reader - you seemed to know they were called diagonal...anyway, like Bitches Brew but with different instruments? what you like, rhodes, bass, guitars, drums, sax? ;) Everyone seems to throw bitches brew in as a reference to anything jazzy whilst distorted. I think they were more like a jazzier deep purple, with some gentle gianty changes going on - but then I do like progressive rock. And I'm guessing they do too ;)

I'm guessing they also like mind-altering substances and campfires. They were pretty cool.

  • 21:32, 10 Aug 2008

    mikesalmon

    its slightly rank a word

  • 21:51, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

it's not very positive sounding is it?

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    non

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

it's less sinister than it sounds though

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    you enjoyed the prog then

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    it's sort of a compliment

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    I did

  • 21:52, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

more so than I thought I would

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    it grew on me

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    I also liked the hair

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    so much of it

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I think the band draws their power from it

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

there's no two ways about it with prog

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    the growing, you mean?

  • 21:53, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    well both actually

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

what did you think of invasion?

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    pretty intense

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    I'd definitely watch them again

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    yea, impressive at the start

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    ive seen them alot

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I think I like them more than their influences

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    her voice is amazing

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    gets a bit samey

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    yeah?

  • 21:54, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

but if you're thrashing your head around

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    yeah

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    then it works

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

well, personally, even Hoof are mainly a live prospect

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

and why shouldnt it be simpler

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    true

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    unfortunately

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

though they are more proggy and well-thought out in song-structures etc

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

theres a couple of tracks they have

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

that are just perfect for what they do

  • 21:55, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

and the Pre-Emptive False Rapture album was much better than any bits and bobs of recordings I'd heard before

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    yeah

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    great showmen too

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

but the rest dont cut it as hard

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    obviously

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    or with as much zeal

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    its refreshing

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

that 'tonyte' track makes good party music

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    depending on the aprty

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    yea, its the best track

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    definitive

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    defo

  • 21:56, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

moss-covered obelisk is pretty awesome too

  • 21:57, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

simply for hopping between about 3 distinct genres

  • 21:57, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

these people are all in other abnds aren't they?

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

wasn't the woman from Invasion in some pretty famous band before?

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

yes, the bassist is in cathedral

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    if they still go

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

a pretty famous abnd I haven't heard anything by

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    i think so

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I think Cathedral are on hiatus

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    maybe indefinite. Not too sure

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

i was told she was in something but i cant remembe

  • 21:58, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

i keep wanting to say S express

  • 21:59, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    but that is impossible

  • 21:59, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    that was that twat woman

  • 21:59, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    sonique

  • 21:59, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    wasnt it

  • 21:59, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    haha

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    dunno

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

Invasion woman wasnt in them though

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

thought she was in Chrome hoof prior to Lola but I am probably wrong

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

well she joined in with them that time

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    hink

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I was pretty drunk when I saw em first so I may have imagined a shorter frontwoman

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    i think

  • 22:00, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    yeah she did at Dingwalls

  • 22:02, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    aha

  • 22:02, 10 Aug 2008
  • 22:02, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

are you in concurrence with the gentle giant vibe of diagonal

  • 22:02, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    with their vibe?

  • 22:02, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

think so, although I think they suffered from being the most incongruous band on the bill

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

f and invasion seemd more natural bill-sharers

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    gh

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

it was a good mix though

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    yea

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

oops - that should say 'hoof and invasion' up there

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

where can you put prog rock though i suppose

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    haha

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    indeed

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

post rock doesnt cut it for me

  • 22:03, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

it is by it's very nature an object which does not stack easily on shelves

  • 22:04, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

yes, i think it must be deliberate

  • 22:04, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I think post rock has its place too, but I listen to more prog

  • 22:04, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

that invasion woman was in do Me Bad things, btw

  • 22:05, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

although, why I have capitalised only the two middle words is anybody's guess

  • 22:05, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    ah yes

  • 22:05, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    never heard anything by them

  • 22:05, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    have heard of them

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

no. same here. maybe they weren't as famous as I presumed

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    clears that up

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

YES, i was thinking I might go see Diagonal in a Church in September

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    phew, what a relief

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    dig it

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    i mean friday

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    (I think you would)

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    in a church

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    so its all relevant

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    dont thell me they're christian

  • 22:06, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    really?

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

haha yeah they're doing a Mass or something. one of them is actually a vicar

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    !?

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    haha surely not

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

a mass á la Black widow?

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

nah its just one of those gigs in churches things that people do sometimes. in brighton.

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    could be epic

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    suitably baroque i feel

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    yeah

  • 22:07, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    could sound shit

  • 22:08, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    as in, church sound

  • 22:08, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

is something that has many variables

  • 22:08, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    boomy etc

  • 22:08, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

often the atmosphere makes up for it

  • 22:08, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

I saw Virgin Passages in a church and that kind of worked, but they are much quieter

  • 22:09, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

i hope the church has a big pipe organ, and the get to use it

  • 22:09, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

yeah i think Low played the same church a while back

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    pipe organ would be massive

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    though possibly uncontrollable

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    in volume

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

they had some dudes in brighton a couple of months back doing happy hardcore music on a huge church organ

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

god would probably be angry if it was used for prog rock anyhow

  • 22:10, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    i missed it, outrageously

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    not if it was GENESIS

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

i reckon god would be into prog

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    happy hardcore, argh!

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    haha

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    "lol"

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

that lol in quotes looks like a vulture. sort of

  • 22:11, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

there is very little happy about hardcore

  • 22:12, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

happy hardcore makes me think of rape victims in ditches and crashed cars

  • 22:12, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    bad memories?

  • 22:12, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

also, if happiness is an emotion, doesn't that make happy hardcore basically an offshoot of emotional hardcore, which is... EMO!!!

  • 22:12, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    yeah, the 90s sucked man

  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

not if D-REAM had anything to say about it

  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

    i wish i hadn't mentioned happy hardcore

  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    or D REAM

  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

    they're not happy hardcore

  • 22:13, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

is this thing on public view

  • 22:14, 10 Aug 2008
    adamb

although it did introduce me to "The Sun Always Shines on TV" by A-HA

  • 22:14, 10 Aug 2008
    mikesalmon

does that mean people looking for prog

  • 22:14, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    oh yeah

    adamb

yeah i think this is saved for the ages

  • 22:14, 10 Aug 2008
    thesvenhunterthesvenhunter

    I don't know if it's googlable

  • 22:14, 10 Aug 2008
