The JCC for London are delighted to invite guests to Board the Slow Boat to Haifa, complete with bands, tea dancers, stewards, performers, cocktails and cupcakes. The party on Sunday 6 July, will take place on the HMS President and will transport the guests to the dwindling hours of the British Mandate in 1946 with renegade Jewish partisans hidden in the steerage.
Entertainment from Israeli emerging sensation Rona Kenan playing an exclusive set of 40's classics in addition to her own work plus 1940s jazz swing band The Hot Club de Kings Cross with visuals from Miki Shaw and never-seen-before footage from The Jerusalem Cinematheque (Israeli Film Archive). Join the ship lecture by Claire Benjamin and Captain James Henry Parker and secret partisan meetings with instructions on how to smuggle your way into Palestine. All guests should to dress in 1940s costume.
The evening will also include Tea dance lessons by the fabulous Dorothy’s Shoes - absolute beginners and experienced dancers alike are invited to join her on the dancefloor for a quick quickstep, a lazy swing, or a romantic rumba. Desert Island Dance Club tunes will be spun by DJ Nicky Spice, who will bring a mix of breezy big band, scintillating swing and jumping jazz.
Produced by Yad Arts, Slow Boat to Haifa is presented by the JCC for London as part of its 2008 Off the Beaten Track programme. The JCC’s mission is transform Jewish life in the Capital. With Slow Boat to Haifa, the JCC is creating a new kind of cultural event that which puts Jewish and Israeli culture on the map in a new, exciting and sometimes surprising way, with people who are all Jewish (or Jew-ish) but whom you might not have expected to see on the same stage at the same time.
