Some professions seem to be a magnet for the most arrogant, snobbish people. Not everyone is indeed awful in a particular career. However, sometimes, the number of appalling people and experiences overshadow the decent ones. Finding a good one is a needle in a haystack. People in an online forum nominated these professions that attract the most arrogant people.
Professors
A bit on the nose, but the profession of professors, particularly in colleges and universities. One person describes them as believing “their farts can illuminate minds.” Another poster talks about how professors are apt to boast to students about their accomplishments.
Pilots
I did not realize since I rarely fly but many mention pilots as full of arrogance and entitlement. A person highlights this, pointing out how pilots take their families to the pre-check line because the rules don't apply, and they have no problem requesting a supervisor if they don't get their way. Not only airline pilots, as several mention fighter pilots.
Tech
Tech, though a broad swath, conceit seems pervasive in the industry. The phrase “tech bros” didn't come from nowhere. Even other “techies” mention the pervasive smugness is unbearable. If you've ever argued with someone in the tech industry, they think they know everything, even if another tech person says the opposite. Now let's talk about tech's relative.
Engineers
When a ton of people mention a particular occupation, beware. As someone bluntly puts it, engineers think they are “the smartest” when they are just “average.” They even “look down” on others in the tech industry. Yikes.
Nurses
Considered the “mean girl's profession,” plenty of nurses talk down to patients, delivering little but “snark.” Another person vows to avoid doctors because they don't want to deal with the rude nurse. Based on personal experience, I have to agree with this one. I've unfortunately rarely encountered a kind or caring nurse.
Politicians
Politicians are at a different level of arrogance, especially since they love to be loud and wrong. The label applies to both political parties. As someone who abhors politicians breaks down, politicians make a “career out of lying and pandering” to get money and “stay in office.” But their belief that they know best, even when their constituents say otherwise, is beyond frustrating.
Chefs
If The Menu reminds you of anything, it's how chefs believe you must praise them for their craft or else. A hospitality industry worker says that “every boss” is an “outspoken misogynist.” Another says most chefs do not know their way around the kitchen, and many have drinking issues.
Influencers
Be it Instagram or TikTok, influencers can be intolerable. They talk down as though they're celebrities and expect free products and labor. They justify it by saying they'll promote the person or brand. If they hear “no,” they freak out and complain. But it's also not surprising, given brands do offer them free stuff. Still annoying, though.
Veterinarians
Based on recent experiences, I wholeheartedly concur that veterinarians are conceited but also untrustworthy, as their goal is to make you pay for more and more tests. I had a vet repeat the same thing to me over five times as though I lacked basic comprehension skills. Condescending and emotionally manipulative, they are necessary for pet owners, but like mechanics, it's hard to find a good one.
Real Estate Agents
Finally, someone says if they could walk in a real estate agent's shoes for one day, “they could rule the world.” People label real estate agents as “developing an unjustified sense” that they are above everyone. They are an “insufferable” group that inspires more frustration and anger than I thought possible. But the forum exploded with disgust.
What do you think? Did the internet get this right, or are you willing to go to bat for a profession on their list?
